# Change Management

The discipline of getting people to adopt a new way of working and actually change how they work.

Change management is the discipline of getting people to adopt a change and alter how they work: communication, training, stakeholder engagement, and the deliberate management of the human transition from an old way of working to a new one. Its target is adoption, not delivery.

Change management is the complement to project management, and treating either as optional is costly. Project management delivers the output; change management secures the adoption that turns the output into a benefit. Funding the build while starving the adoption is a reliable way to deliver a program and lose its value.

### Commonly confused

Project management, or an optional add-on. Project management delivers the output; change management gets people to adopt it. Funding the build and starving the adoption loses the benefit.
