Continuous improvement is the practice of steadily refining how work is done — reducing waste, raising quality, and improving results through many incremental changes rather than a single big project. It is closely associated with operational excellence and lean methods.

Managed as a portfolio, continuous-improvement initiatives benefit from the same prioritization, tracking, and benefits realization as larger programs, so their cumulative value is visible.

### Commonly confused

Transformation. Continuous improvement is incremental gain within the current operating model; transformation is a discontinuous, portfolio-scale shift in how the business operates. Labeling routine improvement "transformation" applies the wrong governance and risk tolerance.
