# Deployment

Rolling something out — making it available to its users.

Deployment is the act of rolling something out: installing the system, releasing the feature, or making the new process available to the people meant to use it. It is a delivery event, measured by whether the thing is in place and accessible.

Deployment is necessary but not sufficient for value. It is easily mistaken for completion because it is visible and datable, but a fully deployed capability with no adoption produces no benefit. Deployment puts the tool in people's hands; only adoption turns it into a changed way of working.

### Commonly confused

Adoption. Deployment makes something available; adoption is whether people actually use it. Reporting deployment as "done" claims a benefit only adoption can deliver.
