# Sponsor

The executive accountable for an investment and the value it is meant to return.

A sponsor is the executive accountable for an investment — the senior leader who authorizes the funding, owns the case for doing the work, and answers for whether it delivers. The sponsor provides air cover, unblocks at the executive level, and carries ultimate accountability for the initiative's success.

The sponsor is one of three roles that are often conflated. The sponsor owns the investment; the benefits owner is the person, usually in the business, whose own targets move when the benefit lands; and the delivery lead runs the work day to day. Clarity among the three matters because each answers a different question — funded, wanted, and built.

### Commonly confused

The benefits owner or the delivery lead. The sponsor is accountable for the investment; the benefits owner is accountable for the benefit landing; the delivery lead runs the work.
