A benefit is the measurable improvement — usually financial — that an outcome produces: the cost removed, revenue gained, or risk reduced that a business case promised. It is the point of the whole chain, the reason the initiative was funded.
A benefit is distinct from the outcome that produces it. An adopted process is an outcome; the cost that adoption removes is the benefit. In private-equity language, the sum of an organization's benefits is what a value-creation team calls value creation — the same idea viewed at enterprise scale rather than initiative by initiative.
