Portfolio

The whole set of programs and projects, ranked against strategy.

A portfolio is the complete set of an organization's programs and projects, considered together and ranked against the strategy. It is the level at which prioritization happens — where competing initiatives are weighed against one another and scarce resources are allocated to the work that matters most.

Because the portfolio is the strategic level, it is governed differently from the projects and programs within it. Portfolio management asks not "is this program on track?" but "is this the right set of programs, and are they still the best use of capacity?" In a private-equity context, the value-creation plan is effectively the portfolio of prioritized initiatives across the hold.
