What did you study at school?

I studied Nuclear Medicine Technology at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Why did you choose that subject?

I was drawn to that career because while I wanted to help people in a direct patient care role and I also liked splitting that time with lab work. I find the science fascinating — Nuclear Medicine is a diagnostic imaging technique used to assess the function of the body’s systems. How different pieces come together into a complex human body is incredibly interesting and beautiful. I also really enjoyed the interesting application of technology-in this case to improve health outcomes for patients.

For similar reasons, I enjoy working on a large, feature-rich platform like Conductor where all the system’s pieces come together.

What do you do now at Sensei Labs?

I’m a Front-End Engineer, which means I build functional and intuitive user interfaces aligned with Sensei Labs’ vision and brand. I work in a cross-functional team and collaborate with people in different roles every day.

What skills have you brought with you from your unconventional journey?

As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, you have to be prepared for anything-hospitals can be unpredictable places! This cemented decision-making, problem solving, and time-management skills which are all extremely valuable in building software. I collaborated with a team of technologists and radiologists to ensure the best possible patient outcomes, while working with many patients who were often in a heightened emotional state. Teamwork and communication skills are essential to my job as an FE Engineer in an agile environment such as ours. I’ve had a lot of practice explaining very technical procedures in layman’s terms which now helps me communicate goals and challenges organization-wide.

What advice would you give to folks who are coming from unconventional paths?

Always be open to learning new things and be tenacious in pursuing your new goals. I think it can help to find a community of supportive people to keep you motivated-for me that was the network of current students and alumni at the bootcamp I attended. Also learn how to market yourself-publicly share the things you are learning online and work on building a portfolio where you can showcase your new skills, prospective employers will appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Remember the value of your soft skills and transferrable expertise from past experience.

What did you study at school and what was your first job?

I did a Bachelor of Business Administration at Laurier and specialized in Marketing and International Business in my fourth year.

My first job after graduating was as a recruiter with at a recruitment firm that specialized in filling digital media, marketing, and development positions.

What did you like about working in Recruitment or studying Marketing and Int. Business?

Studying Marketing and Int. Business really helped me learn how to collaborate with people who all have different approaches and different ways of thinking when it comes to working together on a project and problem solving. It was also interesting to learn about the nuances in doing business from one country to the next. It opens your mind and helps you take a step back before diving right into making assumptions and problem solving.

As a Recruiter, I really enjoyed getting to know the candidates I represented on a deep level; both personally and professionally. It was extremely rewarding when you were able to successfully match a candidate with an open position because you were able to fulfill the needs and aspirations of the candidate as well as the business that was hiring.

My curiosity in learning about people and confidence in building relationships with new people that came from these roles has also played a huge part in my success at Sensei Labs.
